My father, Admondo Dondes Rubbo (Don Rubbo Sr.), proudly served in the United States Army during two periods: he enlisted at age eighteen in February 1945 during the final months of World War II and was honorably discharged in June 1946; he re-enlisted in April 1949 and served through the Korean War era until his release in November 1952. He received three medals for his service. My father told us of his work as a talented draughtsman with the Army Engineers, where he drew bomb plots and technical diagrams. His quiet strength and love for family carried into our small Bronx kitchen, where, in 1968, he taught a young boy how to turn simple ingredients into something miraculous. That childhood memory became the heart of My Father’s Miraculous Rock Soup — and now, through The Great American Cooking Revival, we are honored to offer this story and recipe to military families who understand better than most the power of gathering around the table after service and sacrifice.
